Discs are natural shock absorbers located between the vertebrae of your spine. A herniated disc occurs when the disc is injured, breaks open and the soft interior protrudes through the rupture. Herniated discs are often caused by car accidents, although there are many other potential causes as well.

When a herniated disc irritates a nearby nerve it can result in pain, numbness, and weakness in your arm, leg, or buttocks.
