When products are released to the market that turn out to be dangerous, often those items end up being recalled. Hopefully, the dangerous consumer products are recalled before anyone gets hurt, but this does not always happen. When an injury occurs as a result of a product defect, an Atlanta defective product lawyer should be consulted to provide help to the victim of the injury or, in the case of fatal injuries, by surviving family members.
Many different types of products are subject to recall, from dangerous medications to unsafe baby products. However, one of the most commonly recalled products is vehicles.
A lot can go wrong with cars, and the consequences can often be dire when there are problems. For example, just recently, Ford recalled 555,000 cars because there was a risk that the cars could roll away without notice. This would put everyone near the vehicle at risk of being hit and hurt or killed by the runaway Ford.
Ford Recalls Vehicles Due to Rollaway Risk
UPI reported on the Ford recall, which was announced in mid-July. The recall affects approximately 555,000 Ford Fusion sedans and Ford escape SUVs. The affected vehicles include 2013 to 2016 Fusion’s as well as some Ford Escapes from both the 2013 and 2014 model years.
The problem with the vehicles that has prompted the recall is the bushing on an important cable. The relevant bushing connects the shifter cable and the transmission. Unfortunately, some of the bushings on the vehicles that have been recalled have begun to degrade. When the bushings degrade, this can result in the bushings actually detaching. This, in turn, can cause the vehicles to fail to shift into park.
When the car or SUV does not shift into park because of the degraded cable, the vehicles can roll away on their own. Dealerships will fix the bushing on the recalled vehicles at no cost to consumers, and those with affected vehicle models have been urged by Ford to make use of their parking brakes on their vehicles until the problem is fixed to prevent the cars from rolling away on their own.
This is just the latest in a long line of problems that have prompted a record number of motor vehicle recalls in recent years. While Ford indicates that there have been no known accidents identified that are connected to the problem, there have been many circumstances in which car recalls have happened only after people were hurt or killed by problems with their vehicles.
